Smackdown started with the traditional Roman Reigns looking angry backstage bit, then Jimmy Uso came out and did a standard promo about Reigns. All the while backstage Reigns continued to stir shit with Jey.
Kevin Owens and Big E showed decent chemistry together as they beat Apollo Crews and Sami Zayn with Zayn taking the loss. Of course he did.
Chad Gable has a grumping session with the Street Profits backstage.
Jey tells Roman that Jimmy wants to see him in the Uso locker room. Reigns asks Jey "Why is he making you the bad guy?"
Carmella and Liv Morgan have another 2-3 minute match, only this time Liv Morgan won. This is going nowhere.
Bayley returns her Ding Dong Hello talk show segment with special guest Seth Rollins. They mutually appreciate each others dastardly heel work for a bit, which is amusing. Then Cesaro returns to beat up Rollins.
Rey Mysterio announces he will call out Roman Reigns.
Montez Ford and Chad Gable, two great young talents, have a short but inconsequential match which ends when Otis runs in and attacks Ford. Otis is now clean shaven to show he is an angry villainous man now. What a great idea that was...
Nakamura faced Baron Corbin for the 10 millionth week in a row, and won, and then the guitar man Boogs helped him keep the godawful crown gimmick. This isn't treading water, this is a time loop.
Adam Pearce notes that Nakamura and Corbin are tied at 2-2 in this best of 10 million series no one wanted.
Reigns confronts Jimmy Uso, who hits a solid promo on the champ, before Jey Uso shows up to yell at his brother, and then Roman Reigns speaks and puts a full wedge between the two brothers.
Rey Mysterio calls out Roman Reigns and demands a title shot at Hell in a Cell after Reigns beat the shit out of his son. Reigns comes out, accepts that, and then beats the shit out of Rey for 5 minutes.
You have to be careful that treading water doesn't turn into misery booking. Reigns has just about got away with that so far, but his complete dominance without any comebacks or setbacks is at the point where it needs to start building to a climax.
This Smackdown was a lot like a RAW. Most people in the same holding patterns, awaiting fans returning to the arenas next month. There was very little of note to go watch, so this one gets a 4/10, the weakest Smackdown vote of the Reigns Era.
